FreeBSD removes the last GPL code from its base system

Summary: A change merged into the FreeBSD source tree retires dialog, described as the last GNU GPL licensed component in the base system, replaced by the BSD-licensed bsddialog. The installer had already moved to bsddialog, and the remaining consumer dpv was turned off and retired. FreeBSD 16.0, which carries the change, is in development with release expected in December 2027.
Why it matters: Removing the last GPL dependency lets FreeBSD ship a base system that downstream vendors can redistribute under permissive terms only.
